Homeowner's Fall Checklist
Schedule Service on your Heating System
Have a professional take a look at your heating system to conduct preventative maintenance before you need to run it each day. Professionals will also make sure that your unit is running property, and ensure it will last through the cold months.
2. Reprogram Thermostat for Colder Temperatures
Say goodbye to the A/C, and hello to the heat! Be sure to adjust your thermostats with the changes in weather to maintain a comfortable and energy efficient home.
3. Replace batteries on smoke & Carbon monoxide Detectors
Fire hazards increase in the fall/winter, as we set our furnaces, fireplaces, and ovens into high gear. It’s important to make sure your safety devices have new batteries to last the season.
4. Reverse ceiling fan directions
Did you know that switching your ceiling fan to spin clockwise can help keep your house warmer in the cold weather? By operating your ceiling fan at a low speed in this direction, it creates a gentle updraft that pushes the warmer air down into the unoccupied space.
5. Seal cracks around doors & windows
Small drafts can lead to serious discomfort - don’t wait until it gets really cold to take cafe of these, you’ll thank yourself later.
6. Cover your a/C Condenser
Be sure to cover your outside A/C unit with a waterproof tarp to prevent build up of snow and moisture. It will also deter rodents and other small pests from finding homes in the unused space.
7. Clean out gutters
Be sure to clear out leaves and other natural debris from your gutters before the weather gets too cold. If you skip this tasks, the contents will freeze over the winter, and water from melted snow will have no where to go.
8. Trim low hanging tree branches & Cut back Perennials
With fall comes cooling temperatures, which makes for more enjoyable yard work. Take the opportunity to trim up overgrown trees and bushes, and cut back perennials so they are ready to shine when Spring comes back around.
9. Empty gas from lawn mower & store for winter
Gas kept in your lawn mower over the season can get old and stale, and can cause damage to the machine itself. Clear it out, and find a safe and dry space to store it for the season.
10. Store hoses & Turn off outdoor water spigots
To avoid freezing of the water in your outside hoses, it’s best to remove them before the temperatures get below freezing. If not, it can lead to bursting of the pipes when spring rolls around.
