Highland

St. Paul, MN

The Mississippi River forms the winding, natural western and southern boundaries of Highland Park, a quiet tree-lined neighborhood of mostly post-war houses with a small-town feel. A large park with golf and disc-golf courses, baseball fields, a pavilion for concerts, and an aquatic center with outdoor pool are busy family destination throughout the temperate months. The annual three-day Highlandfest is a family and community institution, with games, food and entertainment for all. Grocery stores, retail shops, a library, delis and pizza parlors, and a movie theater give life to the business district on Ford Parkway near the river.

The neighborhood is also full of surprises. Fox and deer live in the woods. A thriving Hasidic Jewish community resides in Highland Park. On a private spur off Edgecumbe Road is a wooded pocket of cultural and architectural history: the former grounds of the Pierce Butler Jr. estate, now a showcase of modernist homes. The popular youth performing troupe Circus Juventas is located under its big top in Highland Park. Biking, strolling and exploring along the river bluffs are popular pursuits all year around.
