A rich mix of single-family homes in a variety of architectural styles (Queen Anne, Craftsman, Prairie, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival), three historic colleges/universities, corner stores, sturdy pre-war apartment buildings and vibrant commercial corridors co-exist in the popular Mac-Groveland neighborhood. Stretching to the Mississippi River (with its scenic bike and walking paths) on its western border and the Summit Avenue Historic District to the south, the neighborhood offers tremendous variety in housing, shopping and entertainment. Grand Avenue is a well-recognized commercial thoroughfare, replete with national retailers, local specialty shops, bakeries, traditional restaurants and coffee houses. The avenue is also the site of Grand Old Day, one of the oldest street festivals in the nation; the festivities include a parade, music, art and food, all highlighting the neighborhood’s uniqueness. A notable pocket within the neighborhood is Tangletown. Located next to Macalester College, Tangletown includes several historic homes including a Shingle-style house designed by Cass Gilbert and James Knox Taylor. The University of St. Thomas and Saint Catherine University are also located here, infusing the neighborhood with collegiate energy and offering residents abundant sporting, cultural and arts options.
